If you don’t have anything really silly to do on your Living to Do List, it’s time to start adding goofy stuff. Life is too short to not be as silly as you can possibly, as often as you possibly can. One of the best places to be silly is in an elevator. I’m not sure why, but it seems like an elevator is a whole different world. Once you’re on—maybe because of the close circumstances, maybe because it’s a box floating in the air—you are suddenly not a part of Earth, but of the Elevator Community. Hence, it is perfectly acceptable (whether your mother thinks it is or not) to do the following.
10. Face the Back Wall
I think more and more people have done this—at least, the crazy people I know have. Once my BFF in high school and I rode the elevator up and down this way for a good half hour while we waited for her mother in the doctor’s office. Good times.
9. Make Up Crazy Stories
Tell the strangers on the elevator that you are a renowned paleontologist who is credited with discovering some rare species of ground sloth. Make up a story about how on the way to the doctor’s office today, three beavers crossed the road in front of you and you had to stop for them to cross. Be creative.
8. Get Artsy
Sit in the corner of the elevator all day and take notes about the people you see. Be obvious if you want to confuse them. Draw pictures of them, write stories about them, write them soppy love notes in crayon and give them to the passengers as they get off the elevator.
7. Speak in Only Haiku
A friend of mine and I used to do this in high school (though not on the elevator) and found it quite hilarious. Rest assured that no one else will.
6. Speak in a Made Up Language
Refuse to speak English. Smile, nod, and use your made up words.
5. Pretend You’ve Never Been on an Elevator
Grasp the rails and act like you are freaking out. Ask other passengers if it’s their first time, too. Pretend you had no idea that it was supposed to move.
4. Sell Tickets
See how many people will pay you fifty cents to get on the elevator.
3. Laugh Maniacally
The more uncontrolled and insane sounding, the better. Get really high pitched as the elevator moves, and then bring it down to a low chuckle when it comes to a stop.
2. Pretend You’re on a Headset
Carry on a complete, obnoxious conversation with a made-up person as people act annoyed.
1. Make Friends
Why not?
