Free Hugs!

Remember that lovely Dave Matthews video where the frumpy hero seeks out a hug from all of the people in the street? Wouldn’t it be amazing if we all were like that—just happy to be, to just go around getting and giving random hugs to one and all? Ok, with the current mentality we have it would also be a little crazy, for sure—but all of that aside, like Matthews sings, all you need is love, every day. With that in mind, on this National Hugging Day, you might want to give out a few of your own—or maybe add a similar item to your Living To Do List, such as…

Hug everyone you know, every time you see them. We do this as a family as it is. People sort of make fun of my big family of “huggers”—from uncles and aunts to my parents and cousins, if we know you, we hug you when we see you; it’s just how we roll. Maybe you’ll freak people out a little, but maybe you’ll also make someone’s day—or start a new hugging tradition with them and their families as well.

Hug yourself. SARK—one of my absolute favorite people in the world (one item on my Living To Do list is to meet her someday!)—is really big on doing this. She said at first it’s a little awkward, maybe a few seconds at time; but before you know it, you’ll wake up hugging yourself every morning with riotous, long hugs that last for ten minutes or more! Feel free to whisper sweet nothings in your own ear (or that of someone you love), call yourself lovely endearments (sweetie, honey bear, sugar pie, darling…), or buy yourself a token of love as well.

Give out free hugs. Hold up a sign and be a part of the “Free Hugs” campaign. You might be amazed at who takes you up on your offer! You can find a great video for inspiration here.

Give out other tokens of love and affection. Maybe you’re a bit uncomfortable with the hugging concept at first—that’s okay! How about starting with giving out little tokens, like candy kisses or little quotes that inspire you on slips of paper, to random people? Explain that these are to make their day a little brighter. Or leave them randomly at places—on the table for the waitress, in the cashier’s hand with your money, on someone’s desk, etc.
