A large percentage of women—and many men, I’d wager—might list “Have my dream wedding” in their Living To-Do list. And, as my little girl would say, “Why not?” Getting married, if you choose to do so, is a huge decision and, hopefully, a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Like anything else that’s only going to happen once, you hope to make it memorable.
Many people think that because I chose to get married at the courthouse with my husband, I didn’t have a “dream wedding” in mind. Honestly, I didn’t; sure, some Celtic clothing, bagpipes, and no shoes would have been nice—something very intimate and casual but lovely all the same—and we did talk about it; but when it came down to it, it simply wasn’t that important to me. We already had a baby, I was still finishing school, and we were happy—why spend a few hundred (or thousand—or more, if you’re many people!) dollars on that single day?
That said, I still have something fun listed that fits this category in my Living To-Do list. When we’re, oh, thirty or so, my husband is going to reenact Rocky’s proposal to Adrian (no joke—at the zoo and everything). Then we’re going to “elope” (ok, a planned elopement) to Las Vegas, where we will renew our vows with a creature presiding as the minister—preferably Yoda, if we can find him.
Yes. We are messed up people.
Specific, unique and special—how is it different from any other bride (or groom)-to-be’s fantasy wedding? So the fancy dress isn’t included (I could care less what we wear), I don’t want cut flowers or cake, and we definitely won’t have a reception. It’s still a “dream” wedding, if only my own.
If you have a dream wedding written on your list, what’s keeping you from it? Do you have the right person already? If so, maybe you two can work together to create a list down to the last detail about what exactly it will entail. Do you want it to be huge and epic, or small and intimate? Is a church required, or can it be outside? Do you want a conventional wedding with the white dress, or something altogether new and groundbreaking, like a scuba diving or roller coaster ceremony?
Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s your dream—and something you definitely want to do. Like everything else on your Living To-Do list, it should be something you want with all your heart.
Now, does anyone know if I can find a Yoda minister in Vegas?
