If one of your goals in life is to make a difference (even if your current living expenses wouldn’t allow for you to provide money to a charity and/or your contribution is small) in the way our country is run. Turn your attention to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union).
The ACLU is a collective of people who have formed as a result of attempting to protect our (as American citizens) rights and liberties. The ACLU is working in congress, in legislature, in the judicial court system and in your community.
The ACLU has existed since 1920, when the “palmer raids” broke out. This group of idealists has since then become the leading defender of our rights in the constitution, here in the United States of America. Beyond fighting for our basic rights, they have fought for people of color; women’s rights; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender citizens; prisoners and people with disabilities who could (otherwise) not fight for their rights on their own.
When news broke out that Obama had signed the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) into law, the ACLU formed a pledge encouraging people to sign. Make a difference in your life by helping others. Click here to sign the pledge.
In essence, the NDAA being signed into a law will allow current and future presidents to detain anyone in our country who is under speculation or has been associated with being a dissident. Under this bill, citizens could be detained by the military for any reason, for any period of time.
