While it’s commendable to resolve to quit smoking, lose weight, and generally make yourself more fit, why not add a quirky, fun resolution to your list this year? Maybe you’ll be more likely to keep your resolutions if one of them is something that you actually look forward to. Here are a few ideas—be sure to add your own.
Make a daily resolution. I heard about a family resolving to take a photo together every day for the year; with digital cameras, this is definitely doable if you can remember to do it! What other daily resolutions would you enjoy? How about a daily joke, walk, small piece of chocolate, song download, mini self-foot massage, prayer or meditation, game…? The trick here is to not make too many resolutions; just pick one or two that you would really enjoy.
Do something scary every week. Go on an adventure. Surpass your own boundaries. Travel, speak in front of a crowd, hold a spider at the pet store, eat something weird, whatever—just do something that would normally scare you and get past it! Imagine how strong you’d feel after a year. Write down 52 scary things and put them into a hat and draw them out, or schedule them with a friend. Be sure to keep a journal to chronicle your own mightiness.
Resolve to do more of what you love. How long has it been since you dove into your favorite book series, painted a masterpiece, or put together a model airplane? Whether it’s collecting comic books, reciting monologues, or whipping up delicious baked treats, do more of it this year. Be sure to make your goal specific or you won’t be able to keep it; try, “Bake a new goodie once a month,” or “Visit comic book store every other week.”
Make beautifying your home a priority. If you don’t love where you live, then you may not be too happy in your own humble abode. Assess why this is. Do you hate the color of the walls? The carpet? If you can’t stand your neighbors, you’re probably out of luck unless you have the means to move (and if you do, why not?)—but the rest can be easily fixed, if not partially then wholly. Vow to paint a room every other month until every room is a color you love. If you have a green thumb and miss having plants, resolve to bring more flora inside for your enjoyment. Save a little each month for some new carpet if that’s what you want. If nothing else, buy a lovely picture you enjoy and hang it up.
