In 2007, I was able to check off two items from my Living To Do List. I went on my honeymoon—and stayed the night in a haunted house. My husband and I had a lot of fun at the Lemp Mansion of St. Louis, which was gorgeous and spooky—but if I hadn’t known it was supposed to be haunted, I have to admit, it wouldn’t have really been so spooky.
I did have a hard time sleeping, because I sort of wanted to see something out of the ordinary—I had heard plenty of tales from friends and acquaintances, after all, and wanted one of my own. Though I didn’t see anything supernatural during our visit, it was still pretty awesome to stay there just because of its beauty, the garden outside, and the delicious breakfast served there.
If staying at a haunted house is on your Living To Do List, now is the perfect time to plan your visit. Every TV channel from SciFi to Travel is running a special on haunted places, and since it’s Halloween time most of them have special offers you can take advantage of. There are plenty of haunted places to take your pick from.
Of course, some may argue that they have already lived in a haunted house. I have felt and witnessed more paranormal activity in the house I live in right now—as have my aunts who grew up here—than anywhere else I’ve ever visited. I have family members who have described all kinds of spooky, downright terrifying, and sometimes even comical activity in past apartments or homes they’ve lived in.
My uncle’s family, who lived across the street from their town’s old courthouse where people were imprisoned and hanged, have plenty of stories about visiting that house. The family that lived there apparently didn’t mind so much, but one of my family members was reluctant to ever return.
