Sure, you’re aware that you exist. You eat, right? You pee. You probably work and sleep, and somewhere in the middle you glance in a mirror. You’re pretty sure you’re a solid (partly liquid, you guess) bipedal sentient creature with a conscience, sex drive, and general stuff to do.
But just how self-aware are you? Do you know who you would take with you if you were stranded on a desert island? Do you know what 25 random things about yourself you would share if you were asked to do so on Facebook? If an elephant, a chiropractor, and a fungus walked into a bar, would you know what the punch line should be?
September is International Self-Awareness Month, so what better time to get reacquainted with yourself then now? If one of the things on your Living To-Do List is to really get to know who you are, this is a good time to check that off. But how?
It’s simple, really: Pretend that you are the one you’ve always been looking for, and you are just so enraptured and fascinated with yourself that you want to know all about the person you’re in love with—you! Ask yourself the questions you’d ask the person of your dreams. Try to find out everything there is to know about yourself. And if you really want to try to get into your own pants, why not? Go for it.
You could use a book as a guide, such as List Yourself, All About Me or The Playful Way of Knowing Yourself. Or you could just grab a journal and go—take it everywhere and record your thoughts, dreams, doodles, candy wrappers, whatever. By the end of the month you may be surprised to find out who you are—or even who you aren’t.
Take your findings and use them to create new items for your Living To-Do List. Maybe you discovered that you have a yearning to play an instrument that you never fulfilled, or that you really don’t like what you do and want to try something new. Perhaps you found out a fear you never realized you had and want to conquer it, or you remembered something you loved to do—say, make dream catchers, or sing in a choir—and you really would love to take it up again.
Don’t ignore the things you learn about yourself; instead, use your newfound self-awareness to make every day the first day of the rest of your life, and use that positive attitude to really make your life remarkable.
